Expert Tips for Your Winter Skincare

Once Upon a Winter…..
The cold is setting in…you know…the kind that goes straight to the bone! It goes without saying but I will still say it. If your bones can feel it, your skin felt it first. The cold can be pretty harsh on your skin. With that in mind, I thought you may like some tips for your skin care during the most wonderful time of the year!
Let’s Lay Some Ground Work!
Your skin is the BIGGEST organ your body has! It is the super-protector and your first line of defense against the elements. (If you have ever been out in the winter, you understand the ‘elements’.)
Your skin responds to the elements of different seasons in different ways, so what is an appropriate way for us to respond to our skin? Change our skincare as the seasons do. More about that in a bit. First I want to share a few good tips for every season!
Tips for Every Season
Tip #1: Wash Your Face Nightly.
It is so important to let your skin breathe. It can only do this if it has been cleansed. Remove the make-up, dirt and grime that has accumulated throughout the day with natural products. This will help prevent aging and the occasional break outs that many of us still have to deal with. (And your pillowcases will thank you.)
Tip #2: Moisturizing
Whether the weather is hot or cold, there is a potential for you skin to get dry! When you cleanse, moisture is removed from your skin, so it must be added again. If you have naturally oily skin, a light, oil-free option is your best bet. It will keep your skin feeling fresh without causing you to overproduce oil. Don’t forget to tone before you moisturize!
Winter Skin Care
Start with a two-step cleanse.
The second cleanse may be with a foam or milky textured cleanser that won’t strip your skin of the necessary oils and keep your skin pH balanced. Some of my favorite second cleansers are Juice Beauty 2 in 1 Cleanser of Farmacy Clean Bee.
Use the toner that makes sense for you.
You can choose to use toners (not alcohol based), serums, vitamins or boosters as you see fit. Make sure whichever you choose doesn’t dry out your face! If you need advice on this, let’s talk!
Choosing a moisturizer:
When choosing moisturizers look for a professional brand that isn’t too heavy for your skin type. You may have to use trial and error. This is ok! Most stores will let you exchange your beauty products.
Choose brands that are natural, and don’t contain artificial ingredients.
Find a moisturizer that will replenish the lost water and oils in your skin. Even though I have oily skin I have found that oils are great for both dry and oily faces. I’ve found many that are very light weight and absorb quickly and leave my skin with a natural glow. I love Biossance + Vitamin C Rose Oil, Maqui + Prickly Pear Goji or Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer.
Make your skin smooth and soft.
Exfoliate 1-2 times a week to slough off dead skin. But please make sure that your exfoliator does not “hurt” your face. Check out a great exfoliator here.
